Delivery, Fresh from the Internet!

April 9th, 2009 Posted in Moncton, Restaurants, Reviews | No Comments »

Ordering delivery can be a pain in the butt sometimes. Especially if you want things specifically. Sure it’s easy if you’re just ordering a 12″ pizza with the works, but what if you want something left off? Or something added? Try ordering a plain pizza, with just cheese and sauce, sometime. You always get questions like “Ok, what else would you like on that?”

This is why I love the idea of ordering online. You can select exactly what you want, and add whatever additional instructions in plain English. No more worrying about background noise on either end making it hard to understand your order!

Unfortunately, there are not enough companies in Moncton using online ordering systems yet. In fact, I didn’t think anyone was. But a conversation on Twitter did prove me wrong! Here is a list of the restaurants in Moncton doing online ordering:

Also, @R0gueWarri0r pointed out that Papa John’s does online ordering. When I checked out their site, however, I found that the Moncton location does phone orders only. So, if you love Papa John’s, contact the Moncton store and tell them so, and ask them nicely to take online ordering.

So, congrats to the companies in Moncton that are doing online ordering, but it’s still a mighty short list. We’re one of the Top 7 Smart Cities in the world! I’d love to see that list quadruple (or more) this year! Who’s with me?

If you know of any other restaurants in Moncton that do online-ordering, let us know so we can add it to the list!

Update: @joshnet pointed out the Dominos Pizza does online ordering as well, but like Papa John’s, it’s not available in Moncton at the moment.

Update 2 (April 30, 2009): Dominos Pizza is now doing online ordering in Moncton!

Featured NB for Podcamp Halifax

January 22nd, 2009 Posted in Events, Moncton ITA, Technology | 3 Comments »

While MonctonITA is very Moncton-centric, we do see ourselves as a part of something bigger that spans all of New Brunswick. As a part of that, we’d like to take this chance to highlight some of the really interesting people in Moncton and the rest of NB who you may not have heard of.

(the) Inevitable Corp - @comforteagle

Meet Steve Mallet, mild-mannered blogger. I’ve followed him on Twitter for a while, but didn’t really know what Steve did. I knew he had an office downtown, and did something web-based, but that’s about it. It was just the other day that it was pointed out to me that he runs the +5,000 Alexa-ranked OSDir.com from his Moncton office. Linux fans, take note! Read the rest of this entry »

Socially Reliable

January 22nd, 2009 Posted in Events, Moncton ITA | No Comments »

Twitter has become very popular in small IT companies. In the past, we would more likely expect the company itself to have a marketing-lead “official” account. What’s surprising is that it’s individuals within these companies using Twitter.  It’s not uncommon to see the a company lead on Twitter, as well as a few colleagues/employees, all speaking openly about what it is they’re doing.

On its face, you would expect this to provide two big things:

  1. Fast releases of information from people inside the company
  2. Marketing flubs from people who don’t know what not to say

This is where the unexpected comes in; Companies are talking to eachother. Read the rest of this entry »

‘one big badass botnet,’ Worm infects 1.1M Windows PCs in 24 hours

January 15th, 2009 Posted in General IT News, News | No Comments »

This is a shout out to anyone who manages a large windows based network that has access to the internet at any point. Please make sure your Windows PCs are patched up to the latest updates from Microsoft, and that your Antivirus is updated as well.

From Computerworld:

The computer worm that exploits a months-old Windows bug has infected more than a million PCs in the past 24 hours, a security company said today.

Early Wednesday, Helsinki, Finland-based security firm F-Secure Corp. estimated that 3.5 million PCs have been compromised by the “Downadup” worm, an increase of more than 1.1 million since Tuesday.

“[And] we still consider this to be a conservative estimate,” said Sean Sullivan, a researcher at F-Secure, in an entry to the company’s Security Lab blog. Yesterday, F-Secure said the worm had infected an estimated 2.4 million machines.

The worm, which several security companies have described as surging dramatically during the past few days, exploits a bug in the Windows Server service used by all supported versions of Microsoft Corp.’s operating system, including Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Server 2003 and Server 2008.

Microsoft issued an emergency patch in late October, fixing the flaw with one of its rare “out of cycle” updates.

The soaring number of infections by Downadup — also called “Conficker” by some security companies — prompted Microsoft to add detection for the worm to its Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT), the anti-malware utility that the company updates and redistributes each month to Windows machines on Patch Tuesday. The MSRT scans for known malware, then scrubs the system of any it finds.

Microsoft recommended that Windows users install the October update, then run the January edition of the MSRT to clean up compromised computers.
